Muscle Energy Techniques – An Overview

Muscle energy techniques are a type of hands-on manipulative therapies.

Patients lay in controlled positions and are asked to flex or move specific areas, and when they complete the action, Dr. Josh or another team member will us that contraction to further move a muscle or joint.

This procedure is gentle and safe, and it can be practiced on almost everyone. By using the muscle’s own energy, this technique allows for a lighter and gentler form of articulation, using the body’s kinetic movements.

These movements help elongate muscles, increase the ability of motion, release joint pressure and improve range of motion and flexibility.

To accomplish this properly, Dr. Josh and his team are trained in the workings of the musculoskeletal system and how muscles function in pairs to achieve movement.

This paired function is at the basis of muscle energy techniques – it is this combination of extension and contraction that is taken advantage of when the manipulation is taking place.

When combined with other therapies, muscle energy techniques help alleviate pain, relieve inability of motion and increase flexibility.

Reciprocal Inhibition – A Natural Healing Aid

Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) is a type of manual therapy, which varies greatly in its administration depending on the injury, but the patient actively participates in the movements as opposed to passively being articulated to allow reciprocal inhibition.

Reciprocal inhibition means that muscles on one side of a joint will relax to allow for the muscle contraction on its other side.

This is accomplished by using the patient’s contracting muscles to guide the lengthening of muscles, and in this process, joints are mobilized, and movement is gently normalized.

When the patient moves muscles and joints upon request, Dr. Josh or a member of his team will provide a counterforce movement to correct motion inability and improve pain.

By repositioning dysfunctional muscles and joints, we are able to regain range of motion, and encourage proper posturing for healing.

Low-Risk, Non-Invasive Pain Relief

By implementing this gentle manual therapy into your recovery program, you can greatly improve muscle pain, joint tenderness and stiffness.

MET is a natural way to improve your range of motion and achieve pain relief without the potentially devastating side effects of medication or invasive procedures.

We combine MET with other treatments and therapies to ensure our patients have access to the most modern techniques and equipment.
